I never looked at myself as an artist until rather late in life.
In 2015 a close friend of mine, Lina Seidman, who was an artist and a potter suggested that myself and 2 other friends come together at her house to draw. I realized that while I loved botanical art I would not be a botanical artist. It seemed too tight and constricted for me and I found myself very frustrated. As fall approached Lina suggested we move to her basement and that is where so showed us how to do very fluid backgrounds in acrylics and paint from a whimsical place in ourselves. I found that very appealing. As we all started to paint more in this style I arranged for us to host our first small art show at a local wine bar. I sold my first piece on opening night and began to realize that there might be an artist wanting to be given her freedom. I attended 2 other shows, selling at least one piece at each.
At the time, Daniel Smith’s flagship store was in Seattle, Washington and I went there occasionally. It was on one visit that I purchased an art book by Jeanne Haines and learned that she was coming to teach. All of her classes were full but she was giving a 2 hour free demo one Saturday and I went back to Seattle to see her paint. I love the loose, fluid, atmospheric appearance of her style and decided that is the direction I needed to go. I have taken several of her online classes and started to develop as my own artist within that format. Today I finally accept that I am an artist! I Am An ARTIST!
